Air bubbles in nail strips are one of those annoyances that can make a fresh set look less “salon” and more “rushed on the train”. The good news: in our experience, bubbles are nearly always fixable, and they’re usually caused by a small prep or curing detail—not the strips themselves.
If you want the quickest route to a smooth set, start with the right type of strips: our semi-cured gel nail strips are designed to be pressed flat and then cured to “set” the shape. Ready to troubleshoot and try again? Shop now and keep this guide open while you apply.
Air bubbles happen when part of the strip isn’t fully bonded to the nail plate, so a tiny pocket of air gets trapped underneath and becomes visible. Once you know the cause, the fix is usually simple.
One thing we hear from customers time and again is that bubbles show up most often on thumbs and index fingers—because they take the most knocks and we’re usually less patient pressing those down properly.
You can usually fix air bubbles the same day by re-pressing, re-sealing, and (for semi-cured gel) re-curing. The earlier you catch it, the easier it is.
Answer: Warm the strip slightly, then smooth firmly from the centre of the nail outwards to push air to the edge.
Velvora tip from testing: If your room is cold, warm your hands for 30 seconds first. Slight warmth makes the strip more pliable, so it conforms to tiny curves instead of bridging over them.
Answer: If a bubble is near an edge, seal the perimeter and cure in short rounds to “lock” it flat.
If you don’t already have one, using a dedicated lamp makes bubble issues much rarer. Browse our UV LED lamps for a consistent cure.
Answer: If a bubble is caused by trapped debris or a crease, you may need to lift and re-lay the strip carefully—before curing fully.
After testing across hundreds of nail shapes and sizes, this “reset” works best when the bubble is caused by a tiny ridge you didn’t notice at first.
Answer: Bubble-free sets come from dry, oil-free nails, correct sizing, and firm smoothing—especially around the cuticle and sidewalls.
If you’re unsure on sizing, our nail sizing guide makes it easy. Each Velvora set includes 20 strips in multiple sizes, so most people can get a precise fit for every finger.
Answer: Under-curing is more likely to cause bubbles or lifting, because the strip remains slightly flexible and can separate from the nail in high-movement areas.
With semi-cured gel, curing completes the polymerisation process. In simple terms, the gel becomes firmer and more “set”, so it holds the shape you pressed it into.
For a consistent cure, use a quality lamp and cure in rounds—press, cure, check, then cure again if needed. If you want a full walk-through, our community often recommends following the exact order in how to apply gel strips (especially the “press before you cure” part).
Answer: Bubbles show up most on thumbs, index fingers, and ridged nails—target these areas with extra smoothing and edge-sealing.
These nails flex more and get knocked constantly (keys, zips, phone scrolling). Spend an extra 30 seconds pressing the sidewalls and free edge before your first cure.
If your nails are ridged, a strip can bridge over the ridge and leave a tiny air tunnel. Keep nails short, buff very lightly if you choose to (avoid over-buffing), and focus on smoothing from the ridge line outward.
If a strip touches skin, it will lift. Leave a hairline gap (about 0.5–1 mm) from the cuticle for the cleanest seal.
Answer: If the bubble has debris underneath, the strip is creased, or you’ve cured a large bubble in place, removal and reapplication is the neatest fix.
Don’t dig at a bubble with sharp tools—this is how nails get scratched and the strip tears unevenly. If you need to remove, do it gently and follow a proper method. Our step-by-step guide how to remove gel nail strips safely at home shows a nail-friendly approach that avoids peeling.
After removal, rehydrate properly. Our fans love a daily cuticle oil routine (it helps nails look healthier between sets). Try the Watermelon Cuticle Oil Pen for an easy, non-messy finish.
Answer: The easiest way to avoid bubbles is a good fit, solid curing, and the right aftercare—so your edges stay sealed.
If you’re new or you’ve had bubble trouble before, the Velvora Gel Nail Strips Starter Kit is our go-to recommendation because it takes the guesswork out of the process (especially curing). For regular wearers, our 2x Gel Strips Box Monthly Subscription is a handy way to keep fresh sets on rotation, so you’re not stretching wear past the point where lifting starts.
Mid-application and want to browse styles for your next set? Explore our French tip gel nail strips for a clean look that’s very forgiving if your nails are slightly different shapes.
Answer: Velvora strips are designed for comfortable, compliant at-home wear: vegan, cruelty-free, 14-Free, HEMA-Free, pregnancy safe, and fully UK/EU compliant.
We built Velvora for people who want pretty nails without the salon time, harsh removal, or ingredient guesswork. Our products are CPNP registered and REACH certified, produced in certified facilities (including ISO9001) and made with Japanese blade technology for clean edges—because rough edges are one of the sneaky causes of lifting and bubble formation.
If you like to check ingredients before you buy (we do too), you can read more on our product safety and ingredients page. We also offer free UK delivery on orders over £35, and a 30-day satisfaction policy for extra peace of mind.
For external reading on cosmetic safety in the UK/EU, the UK Government guidance on cosmetic products is a helpful overview. If you’re curious about what “cruelty-free” standards can mean, The Vegan Society is a solid place to start.
Bubbles that appear after a day are usually caused by a small edge lift (often from cuticle overlap, water exposure, or under-curing). Press the edge down, seal it firmly, and for semi-cured gel strips do a short re-cure to set it flat again.
Yes—small bubbles can often be smoothed out by pressing from the centre to the edges, then re-curing if you’re wearing semi-cured gel strips. If the bubble has debris underneath or the strip is creased, removal and reapplication will look neater.
Sometimes. A strip that’s too wide can sit on skin and lift, creating bubbles near the cuticle or sidewalls. A strip that’s too narrow can create tension at the edges. Aim for nail-to-nail coverage without touching skin.
A top coat can help seal edges, but it won’t fix trapped air caused by poor adhesion underneath. The real fix is prep (oil-free nails), correct sizing, smoothing from the centre out, and proper curing for semi-cured gel strips.
Thumbs flex more and get the most impact from daily life, so even a tiny edge lift can turn into a visible bubble. Spend extra time pressing the sidewalls and free edge, and make sure your first cure is thorough.
Velvora gel nail strips are HEMA-Free, 14-Free, vegan, cruelty-free, pregnancy safe, and UK/EU compliant (CPNP registered and REACH certified). If you have a known allergy or a history of reactions, patch testing and speaking to a medical professional is always sensible.
