Best UV lamp for gel nail strips: what actually matters
By Velvora · Checked 9 October 2026
In short
For semi-cured gel nail strips you need a UV/LED nail lamp that cures a hand in about 60 seconds and is easy to keep where you do your nails. A small lamp is enough, because strips arrive around 80 per cent cured. Good prep and correct timing matter more than a big wattage figure.
What matters in a lamp for gel strips
Gel strips only need a short, even final cure, so the checklist for a strip lamp is shorter than for a salon gel polish setup.
- Light type: most home lamps are sold as UV/LED. The LEDs in these lamps give out the UV light that cures gel, so there is no need to choose between the two.
- Wattage: higher is not automatically better. Strips are already semi-cured, and very high output can cause heat spikes. Correct time and placement matter more.
- Timing: about 60 seconds per hand, and about 60 seconds after a top coat. A built-in timer saves you counting and stops you stacking unnecessary extra cycles.
- Size and power: a compact, foldable lamp is easy to store and travel with. Check how it is powered, for example by a USB-C cable.
- Price: lamps sold by UK gel strip brands ranged from £10.99 to £55 when we checked (see the table).
How long to cure gel nail strips under a lamp
Prep the nail, place the strip a hairline off the skin, trim and file in one direction, then cure for about 60 seconds per hand. Cure thumbs on their own so the light hits them straight on. If you add a top coat, cap the free edge and cure for about 60 seconds more.
Highly pigmented or glittery strips can need an extra 15 to 30 seconds, because they block more light. Cured strips should feel firm and glossy, not rubbery.
- Gummy or tacky: under-cured. Cure for another 30 to 60 seconds, thumbs separately.
- Edges lifting quickly: usually under-cured or not capped. Add top coat, cap the edge and cure for 30 to 60 seconds.
- Wrinkling or shrinking: can be over-curing or stretching the strip as you apply it. Relax the tension and cut the time slightly.
Are UV nail lamps safe?
For most healthy adults, a nail lamp used briefly and as directed is generally considered low risk, but not zero risk, because UV exposure is still UV exposure. With semi-cured strips you are giving the gel a short final cure, so total time under the lamp is low compared with building painted layers.
People with very sensitive skin, a history of UV-related skin concerns, active irritation around the nails, or who take medicines that make skin more sensitive to light, should take extra care and ask a GP or dermatologist first.
- Cure for the recommended time only, and avoid extra cycles just in case.
- Keep the strip off the surrounding skin before you cure.
- Apply broad-spectrum SPF 15 minutes before curing, or wear fingerless UV gloves.
- Keep the lamp window clean so dust does not block the light, and follow the lamp's own instructions.
Velvora's mini lamp, as published
Velvora sells one lamp in two colours, pink and blue, at £11. It is a foldable 12W UV/LED lamp powered by USB-C, and Velvora says it cures a full hand of its semi-cured strips in about 60 seconds. In the box: the lamp, a USB Type-C charging cable and a user manual.
The lamp is also part of the Velvora starter kit, which adds two gel strip sets and a cuticle oil pen (£39.99 at full price; check the page for current offers).
When you do not need a lamp
Only semi-cured gel strips need curing. Nail polish strips are real nail polish dried into a flexible strip: they press on with no lamp and no drying time. Velvora's polish strips are £5 a set, typically wear for around a week, and come off with non-acetone remover.
Pre-cured gel wraps, such as Mylee's, are also sold ready to wear without a lamp. If you only do your nails for occasions, a no-lamp option may suit you better than buying a lamp.

Questions
Do gel nail strips need a UV lamp?+
Yes. Semi-cured gel strips arrive around 80 per cent cured and need a UV or LED lamp to finish. About 60 seconds a hand turns the soft strip into a hard, glossy manicure. Nail polish strips and pre-cured wraps are different products and need no lamp.
How many watts does a nail lamp need for gel strips?+
There is no need for a high-watt salon lamp. Strips only need a short, even final cure, and very high output can cause heat spikes. Velvora's own lamp is 12W and cures a hand of its strips in about 60 seconds. Prep and timing matter more than wattage.
Is UV or LED better for gel nail strips?+
For gel strips it is not really a choice. Modern home nail lamps are UV/LED: the LEDs give out the UV light that cures the gel. What matters is curing for the right time, about 60 seconds a hand, and curing thumbs separately so the light reaches them directly.
Can I use any UV or LED nail lamp for gel strips?+
Semi-cured strips finish under a UV or LED nail lamp, so most home lamps can be used. Cure for about 60 seconds a hand, then check the strips feel hard and glossy. If they still feel tacky, cure for another 30 to 60 seconds and follow your lamp's instructions.
Are UV nail lamps safe to use at home?+
For most healthy adults, short curing sessions used as directed are generally considered low risk. Cure only for the recommended time, keep product off your skin and consider SPF or fingerless gloves. If your skin is very sensitive or you take light-sensitising medicines, ask a GP or dermatologist first.
Do nail polish strips need a lamp?+
No. Nail polish strips are real nail polish dried into a flexible strip, so they press on with no lamp and no drying time. Velvora's polish strips are £5 a set and typically wear for around a week. Only semi-cured gel strips need curing under a lamp.
