Nails When Your Hands Are In Water All Day

If you have small children, work in hospitality or care, or simply wash your hands twenty times a day, you already know that manicures do not last on you the way they seem to for everyone else. That is not bad luck and it is not you doing it wrong.

What is actually happening

Nails are porous. Soak them and they take on water and expand a little, and as they dry out they contract again. One cycle is nothing. Thirty cycles a day, every day, is a slow mechanical prying action at the edges of whatever is sitting on top. It is also why hot water is worse than cold, and why long soaks like washing up or a bath do more damage than a quick rinse.

Three habits that change it

Dry properly, every time. Not a wave in the air. Actually dry between and around the nails. Water left sitting at the cuticle is the single biggest contributor to lifting, and this costs nothing.

Gloves for the long soaks. You cannot glove up for every hand wash, but washing up and cleaning are long immersions and they are the ones that matter. This is the one piece of advice people skip and then wonder why their edges lift.

Oil at night. Cuticle oil after your hands have been wet all day puts back what water and repeated drying strip out, and keeps the skin around the edge flexible instead of tight and cracked. A pen by the bed is more likely to get used than a bottle in a drawer.

Why gel copes better

A cured gel layer is a sealed, hardened surface with no solvent left to be drawn out, so water does not soften it the way it gradually softens polish. That is the honest reason people with wet hands get on better with gel strips than with a painted manicure, and why chips are rarer than lifted edges when something does eventually go.

The one rule that matters more for you than for most people: give a fresh set a few hours before a long soak. Apply in the evening rather than the morning, and let the bond settle overnight.
