Burgundy nails: wine, cherry and oxblood ideas for autumn 2026

By Velvora · Checked 23 October 2026

In short

Burgundy nails are a deep wine red with a berry or brown undertone, the shade that comes back every autumn. The quickest way to get them at home is a semi-cured gel strip: Deep Merlot Burgundy goes on in about ten minutes, cures in 60 seconds under a UV or LED lamp and lasts up to 14 days.

Are burgundy nails in for autumn 2026?

Yes, and they never really left. Burgundy is the nail version of your good wool coat: out it comes the minute the clocks go back.

Grazia's September 2026 update calls the merlot manicure one of the season's most trending looks. Manicurist Bryony Howell describes it there as elegant and slightly dramatic without being loud, which is exactly why it works for people who normally live in nudes.

Stylist's autumn/winter 2026 trend report agrees. Susan Carroll, founder of Young LDN, expects deep cherry and oxblood to stay popular, and Who What Wear UK's October 2026 colour edit calls a deep burgundy always an elegant choice.

Burgundy, merlot, cherry wine or oxblood: what is the difference?

They are all dark reds, but they lean in different directions. Knowing which one you are after makes shopping much quicker.

  • Burgundy and merlot: a wine red with a hint of berry. This is Deep Merlot Burgundy, Velvora's best seller.
  • Cherry wine or dark cherry: a richer red with a berry and plum undertone. Try Deep Cherry.
  • Plum burgundy: the purple side of the family. Royal Plum is a deep aubergine with a berry undertone.
  • Oxblood: so dark it is almost black. Crimson Sparkle polish strips are a deep oxblood scattered with red glitter.
  • Wine red with no lamp: Deep Shiraz polish strips, real nail polish in a peel and press strip.

Which burgundy suits your skin tone?

Start with your undertone. The jewellery test is the easy one: if gold looks better on you, you probably lean warm; if silver does, you probably lean cool; if both work, you are likely neutral.

Cool undertones suit deep berry tones, so Deep Merlot Burgundy or Royal Plum will look rich rather than harsh. Warm undertones suit warmer reds, so try Deep Cherry or Molten Red, a magenta red chrome that shifts to bronze and gold. Neutral? Lucky you. Start with Deep Merlot Burgundy and work outwards.

Not sure? Our nude nails skin tone guide walks you through the undertone checks in about a minute.

Glossy, chrome, cat eye or glitter burgundy?

Glossy is the classic. Grazia's merlot guide says to finish with a high-shine top coat, and a cured gel strip gives you that shine without one. Deep Merlot Burgundy and Deep Cherry are both high gloss.

Chrome is for when you want the lights at the Christmas do to do some work. Molten Ruby is a deep berry ruby with a liquid-metal shine; Molten Red shifts from magenta red to bronze and gold.

Velvet and cat-eye finishes in wine tones are on Stylist's autumn/winter 2026 list. Velvora's only red cat eye is Berry Dazzle, a raspberry red with a fine pink shimmer, so it is brighter than a true burgundy.

Matte burgundy is around too: Who What Wear UK pairs a matte burgundy with glossy French tips. We do not make a matte burgundy strip at the moment, though: our burgundy sets are glossy or chrome.

Burgundy on short nails vs long nails

Short wins this season. In Who What Wear's September 2026 short nails guide, a nail educator says burgundy, dark cherry and oxblood feel especially modern on very short nails. Deep Cherry looks especially smart on short nails.

Long nails work too, but gel strips are not extensions. You trim each strip to your own nail length, so the length has to be yours. On very short nails, leave the tiniest bit of strip to wrap over the tip: it gives the gel something to hold on to.

Burgundy French tips, ombre and accent nails

French tips are getting a dark makeover. Who What Wear UK suggests swapping white tips for burgundy, and its October 2026 piece on colour-block French tips mentions burgundy with a baby blue tip.

We do not make a burgundy French tip set yet, so here is the honest workaround. For a fade, Dark Red Ombre goes from inky black at the cuticle to a bright, rich red at the tip. For an accent nail, pair Deep Merlot Burgundy with Champagne Sparkles for something festive, or Deep Cherry with Royal Plum for a dark berry mix.

How to make a dark burgundy manicure last and look neat

Dark shades are less forgiving than nudes. Any gap at the cuticle or a rough tip shows, so a few minutes of care pays off for the full two weeks.

  • Prep properly: clean, dry nails with no oil or hand cream. Wait at least 30 minutes after a bath or shower.
  • Size down: if you are between sizes, pick the smaller strip. It should sit a hairline off the skin, never on it.
  • Press from the centre outwards, fold the excess over the tip and file downwards in one direction.
  • Cure each hand for 60 seconds and thumbs on their own. Very dark or glittery shades like an extra 15 to 30 seconds. One cure is good; two is flawless.
  • Keep water, soap and oils away for 3 hours, then wear gloves for the washing up.
  • To take them off, work cuticle oil round the edges and lift gently with the stick. No acetone, and never peel them off dry.

What to wear with burgundy nails this autumn and winter

Pretty much everything in a British wardrobe from October to February. Who What Wear UK pairs burgundy nails with cable knits, suede jackets and dark denim. It also says a merlot manicure would look perfect with a glass of red in a cosy winter pub, which we fully support.

Deep Merlot Burgundy is polished enough for the office and rich enough for Christmas dinner. It sits well with navy, camel and gold jewellery, and it is just the right side of serious for a rainy Monday commute.

Matching burgundy toes

Who What Wear UK says a burgundy pedicure will always look elegant, and its October 2026 pedicure edit rates oxblood and vampy burgundy for toes this month.

The Deep Merlot pedicure set matches the Deep Merlot Burgundy manicure. It is £12.99 at full price, and pedicure strips often last longer than the up to 14 days you get on fingernails. Handy for the winter wedding you will definitely wear open-toe heels to.

Questions

Are burgundy nails in style for autumn 2026?+

Yes. Grazia's September 2026 update calls merlot nails one of the season's most trending manicures, and Stylist's autumn/winter 2026 report expects deep cherry and oxblood to stay popular. Burgundy comes back every autumn because it is darker than red but softer than black.

What is the difference between burgundy and oxblood nails?+

Burgundy is a wine red with a berry or brown undertone, like Velvora's Deep Merlot Burgundy. Oxblood is darker, so deep it is almost black. Velvora's Crimson Sparkle polish strips are a deep oxblood scattered with red glitter.

Which burgundy nail colour suits my skin tone?+

Cool undertones suit deep berry tones, such as Deep Merlot Burgundy or Royal Plum. Warm undertones suit warmer reds, such as Deep Cherry or the Molten Red chrome. If gold and silver jewellery both suit you, you are probably neutral and can wear either.

How long do burgundy gel nail strips last?+

Velvora gel strips last up to 14 days on fingernails, and often longer on toes. Dark shades like an extra 15 to 30 seconds under the lamp. Keep water away for 3 hours after curing and wear gloves for the washing up.

Can I get burgundy nails without a UV lamp?+

Yes. Velvora's Deep Shiraz and Crimson Sparkle polish strips are real nail polish in a peel and press strip, so there is no lamp and no drying time. They are £5 a set, last around a week, and a clear top coat adds extra shine and wear.

Do Velvora sell matching burgundy toes?+

Yes. The Deep Merlot pedicure set is a rich wine red shaped for toes, made to match the Deep Merlot Burgundy manicure. It is £12.99 at full price, cures in 60 seconds and lifts off with cuticle oil, no acetone.
