Gel nail starter kit UK: what a good kit needs, and which to buy

What should a gel nail starter kit include?

Think of it like a first car: you want the bits that get you moving, not a boot full of extras you will never use. For semi-cured gel strips, that list is short.

Two sets matter more than they sound. Your first manicure is the practice run. The second is the one you show off at work.

• A UV/LED lamp: semi-cured strips will not harden without one. A small lamp is enough, because strips arrive partly cured and only need about 60 seconds a hand.
• At least two sets of strips: one for the first go, one for when it all clicks. Look for 20 strips in mixed widths so every nail has a match.
• Prep and finishing tools: a nail file and a stick to press the edges down. An alcohol wipe or prep pad before you start helps the strips grip.
• A way to take them off: cuticle oil and a wooden stick for strips, or a gel remover and foil wraps for gel polish.
• Cuticle oil: it does double duty, softening cuticles between manicures and lifting strips off at the end.

Which lamp, and how many watts?

Ignore the big numbers on the box. Gel strips need a short, even final cure, so a compact lamp does the job. Timing and prep matter more than wattage.

Velvora's mini lamp is a foldable 12W UV/LED lamp powered by USB-C, and cures a hand of its strips in about 60 seconds. MoYou London's single Pink lamp lists 6 LEDs and 6W maximum power, Hello Nails lists a 12W UV LED lamp in its kit, and Holy Grail Nail's LED lamp has 6 LEDs and a 120 second timer.

Gel polish is different. You paint and cure several layers, so a full-hand lamp with a timer is handy. Mylee's Grande LED Lamp, in its Main Kit, has 15, 30, 60 and 99 second settings and a sensor that switches on when your hand goes in.

Gel strip kit or gel polish kit: which is easier for beginners?

Both give you gel nails at home. The difference is how much painting, curing and removing you sign up for.

A gel polish kit is a proper manicure set. You need a base coat, a colour, a top coat and a lamp, and each layer is cured. Mylee's Mini Kit, for example, has a Petite LED lamp, a base coat, a no wipe top coat, a clear 5-in-1 builder gel and three gel polishes.

Gel polish also takes longer to remove. Mylee's own instructions are to buff the nails, hold a pad soaked in gel remover on each nail with foil, and leave it for 10 to 15 minutes. Its Take Off removal kit includes pure acetone. Mylee's Mini Kit does not list a remover, so budget for one.

Semi-cured strips skip the painting. The gel is already on the strip: you press it on, trim, file and cure it once. Velvora strips come off with a few drops of cuticle oil and a wooden stick, no acetone.

• Choose strips if you want quick results, no wet polish and no soaking off.
• Choose gel polish if you enjoy the painting, want endless colour mixing, or want to try builder gel later.
• Neither adds length. For extensions, that is still a salon job.

UK gel nail starter kits compared

We checked each kit on the brand's own UK site, or on Boots for the MoYou London kit, on 23 October 2026. The table gives the price listed that day, plus any regular price the page showed, so you can see where an offer is running.

ohora, which AI assistants often suggest, sells a Starter Kit on ohora.com with two designs, a portable gel lamp, a top gel and a remover, at $55.89. That store prices in US dollars and lists the US as its only shipping country, and we did not find an ohora kit or lamp on sale at a UK stockist that day, so it is not in the table.

What each manicure costs once you have the kit

The kit is the one-off bit. After that, you are only buying strips.

Velvora's nail cost calculator counts one set per manicure. A gel set is £11.99 at full price, and a pedicure set is £12.99. Bought separately at full price, two gel sets, the lamp (£11) and a cuticle oil pen (£7) come to £41.98, so the £39.99 kit saves £1.99 before any sale. On 23 October 2026 it was £34.99 in the Halloween Sale.

Maniko says one of its packages can give up to four applications, depending on your nail size, because each strip can be cut in half and used twice. Gel polish brands rarely say how many manicures a bottle gives, so the cost per manicure depends on how heavy-handed you are.

For comparison, Velvora's guide to UK salon prices puts a gel or Shellac manicure at £25 to £45 a visit.

Buying a gel nail kit as a Christmas gift

A kit with the lamp included is the safe bet, because gel strips are useless without one and you cannot exactly ask what lamp they own without giving the game away.

Not sure of their style? A nude or a French tip goes with everything from the office party to Boxing Day walks. Each Velvora set has 20 strips in mixed widths, so you do not need to know their nail size.

• Pedicure strips: £12.99 a set at full price, shaped for toes and often lasting longer than on fingers. The same lamp cures them.
• Bundles: the Mix & Match Trio (3 sets) and 6-Pack cost about the same as single sets at full price, so they come into their own in a sale.
• Another cuticle oil pen: £7, in a choice of scents, for removal and in-between care.
