Gel nail strips vs nail polish strips: which should you choose?
By Velvora · Checked 14 October 2026
In short
Choose gel nail strips if you want up to 14 days of wear and are happy to use a UV or LED lamp for about 60 seconds a hand. Choose nail polish strips if you want no lamp at all: they press on with no drying time, last around a week and come off with ordinary nail polish remover. At Velvora, gel sets are £11.99 and polish strips start from £5.
What is the difference?
Gel nail strips are real semi-cured gel, cured to around 80 per cent in production. You press them on, trim them and harden them under a lamp, which sets them into a firm, glossy gel finish.
Nail polish strips are real nail polish in a strip. There is nothing to cure, so they need no lamp and no drying time.
Lamp or no lamp
Gel strips need a lamp: about 60 seconds a hand under a UV or LED lamp, curing thumbs on their own, and 15 to 30 seconds more for very dark or glittery shades. Velvora's mini UV/LED lamp is £11, charges by USB-C and comes in blue or pink. The starter kit pairs it with two sets of your choice and a cuticle oil pen.
Polish strips need no lamp. If you are looking for nail strips without a UV lamp, polish strips are the simplest choice. Pre-cured gel wraps, sold by some other brands, are another no-lamp option.
How long each one lasts
Velvora gel strips last up to 14 days on fingernails, and often longer on toes. In Velvora's own wear tests they typically last 10 to 14 days.
Polish strips last around a week, which suits a weekend away, an event, or trying a new colour without a long commitment.
Taking them off
Gel strips come off with a few drops of cuticle oil round the edges. Wait, lift an edge with a wooden stick and peel slowly. No acetone is needed, but never peel them off dry.
Polish strips come off like nail polish, with ordinary nail polish remover.
Cost per manicure
Velvora's nail cost calculator counts one set per manicure. That makes a gel manicure £11.99 at full price, for up to 14 days, and a polish strip manicure from £5, for around a week.
Over a fortnight the two come out close: one gel set at £11.99, or two polish sets from £10. Gel strips also need a lamp once, £11 from Velvora if you do not already have one. Polish strips need nothing extra.
Who each one suits
Both are real products on your natural nails; the choice comes down to how long you want them to last and whether you want a lamp.
- Gel strips suit you if you want a gel finish that lasts up to two weeks, are happy to spend about ten minutes applying them plus a minute a hand under the lamp, and like taking them off with oil.
- Polish strips suit you if you want no lamp and no drying time, like to change colour often, or want the lowest price per set.
- For toes, Velvora's pedicure strips are the same semi-cured gel, shaped for toes.

Questions
Which lasts longer, gel nail strips or nail polish strips?+
Gel nail strips. Velvora gel strips last up to 14 days on fingernails, and in Velvora's own wear tests typically 10 to 14 days. Nail polish strips last around a week. Gel strips need about 60 seconds under a UV or LED lamp; polish strips need no lamp.
Are there nail strips that do not need a UV lamp?+
Yes. Nail polish strips are real nail polish in a strip, so they need no lamp and no drying time. Velvora's polish strips start from £5 a set, last around a week and come off with ordinary nail polish remover. Pre-cured gel wraps from some brands also need no lamp.
Can I use gel nail strips without a lamp?+
No. Semi-cured gel strips arrive around 80 per cent cured and need about 60 seconds a hand under a UV or LED lamp to harden. If you do not want to use a lamp, choose nail polish strips instead, which need no lamp and no drying time.
Which is cheaper per manicure?+
Per set, polish strips are cheaper: from £5 at Velvora, against £11.99 for a gel set. Over a fortnight they come out close, because one gel set lasts up to 14 days and polish strips around a week. Gel strips also need a lamp once.
How do you remove gel strips and polish strips?+
Gel strips come off with a few drops of cuticle oil round the edges: wait, lift with a wooden stick and peel slowly, with no acetone. Never peel them off dry. Polish strips come off like nail polish, with ordinary nail polish remover.
Which is easier for a first try?+
Polish strips are the simplest start: no lamp, no drying time, and from £5 a set. Gel strips take about ten minutes to apply plus 60 seconds a hand under the lamp. Velvora's starter kit includes two sets of your choice, a cuticle oil pen and a mini UV/LED lamp.
