The edit

What nails go with your prom dress

Blue or navy
Deep blue glitter like Cosmic Nights tones in with navy, and silver sparkle suits a paler blue. For something softer, a pale blue or a nude French with a silver line works too.
Emerald or green
Emerald Twinkle has a cat-eye shimmer that picks up the richness of the fabric. Gold glitter is the other classic partner for green.
Red or burgundy
Match the tone rather than the exact shade: a red glitter like Ruby Sparkle for bright red, or a deep berry for burgundy. A soft nude is the calm alternative.
Black, white or silver
These go with any nail. Silver Sparkle or a black with sparkle looks dramatic, and a milky pink keeps the focus on the dress.
Pink, lilac or pastel
Stay in the same family with more shine: lilac glitter like Ultraviolet, a pink chrome, or a holographic pink.

Prom nails, matched to your dress

Start with the dress colour, then choose how much sparkle you want. A deep blue glitter for navy, a green cat-eye for emerald, a red glitter for red, and silver for black.

Gel strips cure under a UV or LED lamp in about 60 seconds. Nail polish strips need no lamp at all, so they are the simple option if you do not have one.

The easiest way to choose prom nails is to match the colour family of your dress and add one finish that catches the light, such as glitter, holographic shine or a cat-eye shimmer.

Velvora gel strips go on at home in about ten minutes and stay glossy for up to 14 days, so they will still look good for the after-party and the photos that follow. Strips are trimmed to your natural nail length, which keeps them neat and comfortable for the whole night.

Most UK schools do not allow nail products during term. That is where strips help: a few drops of cuticle oil around each edge and they peel off, with no acetone and no trip to a salon, ready for Monday.

Good to know

What nails go with my prom dress?+

Match the colour family of your dress and add some shine. Navy suits deep blue glitter, emerald suits a green cat-eye or gold, red suits red glitter, and black or white goes with silver, holographic or a soft milky pink.

Short or long nails for prom?+

Short and medium lengths are popular and practical for a long night. Strips are not extensions: they are trimmed to your natural nail length, so they look neat and tidy whatever length your own nails are.

How many days before prom should I do my nails?+

The day before is ideal, so you are not rushing on the day itself. A set takes about ten minutes, plus 60 seconds under a lamp for gel. Velvora gel strips then stay glossy for up to 14 days.

Can I keep them on for school afterwards?+

Most UK schools do not allow nail products during term, so check your school’s rules. Strips come off easily: add a few drops of cuticle oil around each edge, lift with the manicure stick and peel. No acetone needed.

Do I need a UV lamp for prom nails?+

For gel strips, yes: about 60 seconds under a UV or LED lamp sets them hard and glossy. Nail polish strips need no lamp and no curing, so they are the quick option if you do not have one.
